Vetiver comes from roots — specifically, the roots of Vetiveria zizanioides, a grass native to India whose root system can penetrate up to four metres into the earth. It is this depth of origin that defines the ingredient's character: earthy, smoky, dry, with a slightly citric edge and a longevity that outlasts almost every other fragrance material. When other notes have long since volatilised, vetiver remains. In perfumery, vetiver functions as an anchor of unusual power — it holds lighter components in place, extending their presence and preventing a composition from disappearing too quickly into the air.
