Among all base notes available to a perfumer, honey is the most chemically unusual. At low concentrations — early in the wear, or in the first impression — honey reads as purely sweet: warm, golden, indulgent. As the skin warms the fragrance and phenylacetic acid (one of honey's principal aromatic compounds) becomes more active, the note shifts register. It starts reading as animalic, skin-close, and intimate — simultaneously more personal and more primal than the opening sweetness suggested. Honey occupies both the sweetness and the musk registers at once: it is the only natural base note that spans from confectionary to animal without losing either quality, which is precisely why it sits so naturally at the intersection of playful and seductive.
