Anyone who tries a silicone lubricant for the first time expects something greasy, heavy and difficult to clean. What they get is the opposite: a silky texture that glides without any oily sensation, does not dry out, works in water and requires a minimal amount to maintain the effect. The paradox of “oil that doesn’t feel like oil” has a concrete explanation in the chemistry of silicone.
Why Silicone Does Not Feel Greasy
Conventional oil-based lubricants — coconut oil, mineral oil, baby oil — feel greasy because the fatty acids they contain partially penetrate the superficial layers of the skin or adhere to it densely. Silicone works in a completely different way.
Silicone lubricants are primarily formulated with dimethylpolysiloxane (dimethicone) or cyclomethylpolysiloxane (cyclomethicone). These molecules are large, inert and do not penetrate the skin: they glide over it forming a thin film that reduces friction without blocking pores or leaving a sticky residue. Being chemically inert, they do not react with skin tissue or mucous membranes. The result is the sensation of glide without the sensation of oil.
It is the same principle that makes silicone serums in facial cosmetics leave skin smooth without a greasy feel.
Why It Lasts Longer Than a Water-Based Lubricant
A water-based lubricant evaporates. The water that forms the majority of its formula is absorbed or dries out, and the lubricant progressively loses its effect. In a prolonged use context, this requires frequent reapplication.
Silicone does not evaporate. The molecules remain on the surface while they are present, meaning the lubricating effect stays active for considerably longer without needing to add more product. This is particularly relevant in longer sessions or contexts where interrupting to reapply is inconvenient.
Why It Works in Water
Water-based lubricants have an inevitable physical problem in contact with water: they dissolve. Being water-soluble, water removes them from the surface within seconds, eliminating the lubricating effect exactly when it is most needed.
Silicone is hydrophobic — it repels water rather than dissolving in it. In a bath, shower or pool, a silicone lubricant maintains its effect because water simply cannot displace it from the surface. This property makes it the only functional option for intimate activities involving water.
What “Highly Concentrated” Means in Practice
A concentrated silicone lubricant has a higher proportion of active molecules per volume. This means less product is needed to achieve the same lubricating effect as a more diluted formula. With a concentrated silicone lubricant, an amount equivalent to one or two drops is generally sufficient for an application.
In practical terms, a 15 ml bottle of a concentrated silicone lubricant goes significantly further than a 50 ml bottle of a standard water-based lubricant. The cost per use is lower than the initial price suggests.
When Not to Use Silicone Lubricant
There is one important limitation worth knowing: silicone lubricants are not compatible with intimate toys made of silicone. The silicone in the lubricant interacts with the silicone of the toy, degrading its surface and compromising its integrity over time. With silicone toys, a water-based lubricant is always the correct choice.
With toys made of other materials — ABS plastic, glass, steel, treated wood — silicone lubricant is fully compatible.
It is also not recommended with polyurethane condoms, though it is compatible with latex ones.
Silicone vs Water-Based Lubricant: When to Choose Each
Water-based lubricant is the default choice in most situations: easy to clean, compatible with all materials, and suitable for vaginal and general intimate use. Its main drawback is that it dries out and requires reapplication.
Silicone lubricant is the better choice when longevity matters, when the context involves water, or when a very smooth and persistent silky texture is preferred. It does not require reapplication and the sensation is qualitatively different from water-based.
